Tillai's Dance

Inside all matter swirls particles of pure energy. Inside these particles, an invisible beat, the heartbeat of God, pulses. Saivites say this is the heartbeat of Siva Nataraja, "Tillaiyil Kuttane" in Tamil. One of the highest and purest ways to both experience and express this cosmic energy is through sacred dance.

In order to keep this art a living tradition for Hindu girls living outside India, Dr. Kabaliswaran of the New York Tamil Sangam began an annual Bharata Natyam Festival in New York City in 1986. Each year it grows in inspiration and prestige. This year's contest--offering a $1,000 Balasaraswati Award--will be September 18th, on Staten Island.
