The bindi, or pottu in tamil, is a small dot worn on the forehead, made of red powder, sandalpaste, clay, cosmetics or other substances. A sign that one is a Hindu, and a beauty mark for Hindu women, it mystically represents the "third eye" which sees things physical eyes cannot. Today the bindi is an international fashion ornament. Western celebrities are all over it, from Hollywood actresses to rock singers like Gwen Stefani. (See Turning Cruel to Cool this issue.)
