NEW DELHI, INDIA, September 30, 2003: Thousands of impatient brides and grooms across North India are eagerly waiting for November 4 as many astrologers have said that marriages will be safe from planetary ill effects if solemnized after November 3. There are some, however, who believe that marriages should be solemnized only after August 27, 2004. There is still another point of view that cautions against getting married after Holi next year. In July this year, Jupiter — which governs prosperity — entered the constellation of Leo. Added to this was the presence of Venus. Taken together, these planetary formations are considered inauspicious for starting a married life. While Venus will set on October 6, Jupiter will exit from Leo only by next August. But with the livelihoods of hundreds of thousands of shopkeepers, restaurant owners, jewellers and others depending on the marriage season, astrologers have decided to mellow down. “Earlier this month we decided that marriages could be solemnized in November but only after offering puja to Brihaspati (Jupiter),” says Ashwin Shastri, priest of city’s Laxminarayan temple. Astrologer Suresh Mishra says that marriages can be solemnized only after the dev uthni ekadashi on November 3. “Till then, we believe there will be a chaaya (shadow) of our ancestors on the marriage,” he says. The news, predictably is music to the ears of Pushpendra Kumar of Rajan Band. “Business has been bad. Hopefully November will bring some money for us,” he says. Inauspicious or not, lavish exhibitions on weddings continue to draw huge crowds. New Delhi hosted “Bride & Groom,” and is currently hosting “Bridal Asia.” Jewellers, restaurant owners and shopkeepers in Delhi’s wholesale markets have also heaved a sigh of relief. “There were few customers this year from April to July. But orders are starting to trickle in again,” said an employee of Mehra Jewellers. Astrologers agree that for some marriages, like that of Karisma and Sunjay Kapur’s, planetary positions seldom make a difference. “But others should hurry. Our calculations suggest all marriages will be inauspicious after Holi next year,” says astrologer Amit Gupta of Jyotish Remedies.
