KUALA LUMPUR, MALAYSIA, October 23, 2003: The Malaysia Hindu Sangam is disturbed and concerned over the recent series of unethical and false advertisements in local media, including electronic media, frequently in the Tamil language. Unbelievable fast cure of illnesses have been advertised in Tamil language using Hindu religious and cultural symbols and personalities (e.g. Sithars) to promote the sales of products. To add insult to injury, the Malaysia Hindu community was most embarrassed when the producers of Tiger Beer had full-page color advertisements in the Tamil Press on October 21, 2003, with the spiritual lamps of Deepavali on top of each the bottles, implying some form of Hindu religious blessing to consume alcohol. Members of various Hindu Organizations, including the Malaysia Hindu Sangam, have made police reports on the highly sensitive beer advertisement insulting the Indian community. Protests have also been made to the company concerned.
