TOLOSA, SPAIN, December 15, 2003: (translated from Spanish) The story of “Krishna” wowed Spanish audiences at the 21st annual International Marionette Festival of Tolosa in the Basque province of northern Spain during the first week of December. Twenty-one puppet groups from nine countries performed at the Festival. This was the first year that India participated. Two companies, the Mayur Puppet Theatre and the Shankuru Seethalakshmi shadow puppet group (famed for its stories from Ramayana and Mahabarata) presented “Krishna” and “Knowledge is Power.” The reaction to the Indian presentations was so good that the organizers of the festival have proposed to dedicate a special edition of next year’s festival to India with the presence of six of its puppet companies and an exhibition of Hindu puppets. The Indian ambassador to Spain, Dilip Lahiri, expressed pleasant surprise at the quality of the festival and has announced his intention to do everything he can to facilitate India’s participation at next year’s event.
