SRI LANKA, January 30, 2004: Sri Lanka’s National Integration Programme Unit (NIPU) launched a project to train community mediators from among the respected clergy of all faiths in selected seven districts in the country to provide voluntary services to promote peace and national integration. The first training program for selected Hindu priests, inaugurated in Trincomalee Sri Vigneswara Maha Vidiyalayam in January 17th is named “Mindful Mediator Project for Hindu Clergy.” The project title is “Bilingual competencies and peace building skills for mindful mediators.” Priests will be taught Sinhala and English languages in addition to subjects on Human Rights, Conflict Resolution and Counseling. The Mindful Mediator Project is a comprehensive course to educate Hindu priests from selected centers and Hindu religious schools. Initially twenty centers will be established to train 600 clergy members.
