NEW DELHI, INDIA, February 6, 2004: Upon entering any business establishment in India, the words “Shubh Laabh” are inscribed at the entrance. Two days before Deepavali, the words are also written on any new cash ledger books to sanctify them. So what do the two words mean? “Laabh” means profit or accrual and is the reason businesses are formed in the first place. However, by adding the word Shubh meaning auspicious, it ensures that the money will be made through honest means and used for dharmic purposes. The article explains, “Money got by unfair means — for instance, through tax evasion — could lead to tax raids, court hassles, worries, and ultimately, loss of health and happiness. Good accrual or shubh laabh, is bound to impact your life positively.” Businessmen are encouraged to always accrue profit by fair means knowing that this profit will benefit their family without repercussions. The same principle can be applied to employees who are encouraged to work in such a manner that they earn the salary received. Money received for good honest hard work will reflect on the employee’s family. Adi Shankaracharya says, “Whatever income comes of your honest toil on such money alone content yourself.”
