GUYANA, SOUTH AMERICA, February 10, 2004: The Ethnic Relations Commission here has arranged for a public inquiry into an allegation by the Indian Arrival Committee that the author of the book “Cycle of Racial Oppression in Guyana” is promoting and generating racial hatred between this country’s principal ethnic groups. An advertisement published in the media says the ERC is seeking to deal with the issue through a public inquiry, which is set to take place during the first week of March. Written submissions by persons or groups who are interested in participating should be sent to the ERC not later than March 3 while the deadline for sending written requests to appear before the Commission to offer evidence is February 24, the advertisement informs. Letters must be addressed to: The Chairperson, Ethnic Relations Commission, BIDCO Building, 66 Anira and Peter Rose Streets, Queenstown, Georgetown. The Cycle of Racial Oppression in Guyana was written by Dr. Keane Gibson, a lecturer at the University of the West Indies, Cave Hill campus. It has created controversy since its publication last year, but this article does not explain what the controversy is.
