NEW YORK, USA, February 12, 2004: A Hindu couple in the US have been permitted to fly a religious flag in front of their home as long as it is hidden behind some foliage. Florida residents, Chola and Leila Persaud had been slapped a notice of violation by the association in December 2003, asking them to remove the tricolored flag or face a fine of $100 a day. “Our argument is it is still a First Amendment violation. Why should we be asked to keep the flag hidden? We are trying to get the bylaws of our association changed.” she said. “The flag, which is for the well-being and protection of the family, is put up every year after a prayer ceremony and the old one is immersed in sea or river.” The problem for the neighbors is that by the end of the year the flag is in tatters.
