DURBAN, SOUTH AFRICA, February 22, 2004: Thieves targeted a Hindu temple and national monument in Ladysmith three nights in a row. Religious icons, lamps, crockery and prayer carpets were stolen from the 100-year-old Hindu Thirukootam and Shree Ganasar Temple. “We have damage estimated at about US$1,500. We had icons and lamps that came from India. Some of the lamps are over 80 years old and are not replaceable. We haven’t got one brass thing left in the temple,” said priest Nanna Naidoo. He said the thieves broke into different sections of the temple over the three nights. “They broke into the first section the first night, and broke the locks and the icons. The next day they broke into the main temple. They damaged icons and stole all the brass. The following night they broke into a storeroom and stole the cups and plates, a hotplate and a kettle.” Four window frames earmarked for a new temple were also stolen. Ladysmith police spokesman Captain Charmaine Struwig said a case of burglary had been reported.
