UNITED KINGDOM, February 26, 2004: According to a recent survey, Britain is one of the least religious countries in the world. The poll of 10,000 people in 10 countries found only 46% of British people said they have always believed in God, 27% less than average and above only Russia (42%) and South Korea (28%). The UK had the highest number, at 52%, of those who said they found it hard to believe in God when there was so much suffering in the world. And almost a third of British people (29%) said the world would be a more peaceful place without beliefs in God, but just 6% of Americans and 9% of Indians agreed.

The poll was carried out for BBC2’s What The World Thinks of God and was conducted in the USA, UK, Israel, India, South Korea, Indonesia, Nigeria, Russia, Mexico and Lebanon. For attendance at organized religious services the survey found an average of 46% said they regularly went, but that figure was 21% in the UK, the second lowest behind Russia (7%). The highest figure was 91% for Nigerians, with 54% in the USA. The UK had the lowest figure, according to the pollsters, for those believing religious beliefs make better human beings, at 56%. They said “well over 80%” of people in most other countries agreed. Attitudes across different religions were also examined, and found 85% of Hindus, 83% of Muslims, 65% of Christians, and 38% of Jews said they regularly prayed.
