KUMBAKONAM, INDIA, March 6, 2004: More than 500,000 people took a holy bath at the Mahamaham tank in Kumbakonam after Vedic pandits recited hymns praying for prosperity and peace to mark the auspicious Mahamaham day today. The Kanchi seers, Jayendra Saraswathi and Vijayendra Saraswathi, as well as the Madurai Adheenam, were among those who took bath, along with the pandits and Oduvars, who recited Tamil hymns in praise of Lord Siva. The 10-day Brahmotsavam, celebrated at the only Brahma temple in the country, also ended today with Theerthavari for Brahma at the Arasalaru theertham (another holy water ghat). Theerthavari was held for Vedanarayana Perumal and Veeraraghava Perumal, where pujas commenced from 3:00 am. Hundreds of Thousands of devotees took a holy dip at the Saptha Sagara Theertham at Nallur, where the legendary Maham star is believed to have first come into being. Special pujas were also performed at Panchavarneswarar temple. The temple has a unique Sivalinga, which reportedly changes color during pujas conducted at Five Jamams (a day divided into about 4.45 hrs). The temple, believed to be one of the oldest in Asia, was built by Musukunda Chakravarthy. It was here that Tamil saint Tirugnana Sambandhar attained Moksha (liberation from rebirth).
