YUBA CITY, CALIFORNIA, March 7, 2004: When the Hunji family arrived in California in 1950, there was no temple in the area. Now the Sri Narayan Hindu temple on Franklin Road is the place of worship for Hindus in the area. The Hunji family was instrumental in bringing the temple to completion in 1996. Hardial Hunji donated part of his peach orchard land for the construction of the temple. His wife Kushlia Devi dreamt about building a temple and encouraged her husband to fulfill the dream. Prem Hunji Turner, daughter of Hardial Hunji, says, “Dad built it in tribute to my mom. So at this time of year, local Hindus celebrate the temple’s construction in mom’s memory.” The memorial celebration also coincides with Holi, the festival of color and celebration of the arrival of spring. Sutter County Sheriff Jim Denney and his family have attended the anniversary celebration for the past six years. Denney says, “We really, really enjoy it. With people from so many different places in the world living in the Yuba-Sutter area, it is important that people respect and honor each other’s diversity. That’s the uniqueness of our community.”
