PRETORIA, SOUTH AFRICA, March 15, 2004: Proud parents, teachers and well-wishers of the only full-time Hindu school in South Africa have honored its first batch of matriculates. Ramesh Chhagan, Chairman of the Pretoria Hindu School (PHS) board, said the function was held not only to vindicate the establishment of the school in 1997 — with just the first three grades — but also to celebrate the running of a school with a Hindu ethos while not sacrificing any academic principles. Most of the 15 matriculates obtained a number of distinctions. “We have had more than 40 applications for the school for next year already,” Chhagan said. Although Gujarati, Tamil, Hindi and Hinduism are taught at the school in all grades, the rest of the curriculum combined academic studies with cultural values. The school is now through 12th grade.
