LUCKNOW, INDIA, March 23, 2004: Celebrating the Sindhi new year and the birthday of Lord Jhulelal (patron saint of the Sindhis), the Sindhi community in the City of Nawabs filled the city with glamorous processions and prayer sessions. Coinciding with the new year festivities was the 50th anniversary of the Hari Om Mandir. Governor Vishnukant Shastri opened the celebrations by emphasizing, “The solution to most human problems could be found in religious texts. Anytime we enter a temple, we can easily figure out the solution to all our problems in the presence of God.” Professor G. K. Lalchandani, general secretary of the Hari Om Mandir says, “Water is considered to be very auspicious by the Sindhis as Lord Jhulelal is an incarnation of Lord Varuna, God of the Ocean. For us, all water bodies are holy and we try to keep them clean.” As part of the celebrations, the Sindhis also offered wheat-flour balls and akha (rice) into the river for the fishes to feed on. Prasad made from wheat flour, sweet rice and black gram was distributed to devotees as it is Lord Jhulelal’s favorite dish.
