TAMIL NADU, INDIA, April 1, 2004: Thousands of devotees came to worship the Goddess, with new gold kavasam (decorative covering) and ornaments worth US$320,000, at Mariamman Temple near Thanjavur. The article explains, “Gold contributions by devotees and gold given by Rajaram Rajah Saheb, grandfather of Babaji Rajah Bhonsle were used for making the new kavasam and ornaments. Mr. Divakar contributed $4,000 for paying wages and other production cost of the kavasam and ornaments and T.S.Parthasarathy, an advocate, contributed $1,100 for polishing.” Several officials attended the ceremony where the kavasam and ornaments were taken out in procession and offered to the Goddess. Joint Commissioner, S. Ilango says, “On payment of $8.70, devotees could have a darshan of the Goddess with the new gold kavasam and ornaments.”
