UJJAIN, INDIA, April 7, 2004: A fire broke out today in one of the ashrams set up for the ongoing Simhastha Kumbh, but no loss of life was reported, senior officials told PTI. The blaze began in the Goredau Ashram set up by Mahant Avadhbihari Das in the Ankpaat area off Mangalnath road here at around 10 am, City Commissioner C. P. Arora said.

A few huts built in the ashram premises caught fire, possibly due to heat, he said, adding “negligence” on the part of ashram authorities may also be another reason, though ashram authorities blamed the State Electricity Board. As many as 10 fire engines were rushed to the spot and fire fighters succeeded in dousing the flames within 30 minutes, Arora said. No casualties were reported due to the fire the cause of which was being ascertained, the Commissioner said. Das told PTI that many lives were saved as people were listening to a religious discourse in a pandal nearby.
