KWAZULU-NATAL, SOUTH AFRICA, April 18, 2004) A dance group from KwaZulu-Natal has been invited to perform at the presidential inauguration on April 27. The Surialanga Dance Company left for Pretoria today to begin rehearsals for the prestigious event. Suria Govender, professor of languages at the University of KwaZulu-Natal and director of the company, said it was wonderful to be asked to perform at the ceremony. “It’s such an honour, especially since the elections have gone so well. It’s an artistic expression for democracy in South Africa. It’s a celebration of everything, including the conflicts we’ve had in this country,” said Govender.
Her group performs a cultural fusion of Indian and Zulu dance. The company features young men and women who are students and staff of the University of KwaZulu-Natal. “The intention is to express what is unique about South African culture,” said Govender.
