SEYCHELLES, April 23, 2004: As part of its activities to commemorate the 12th anniversary of the Hindu Temple in Seychelles, the Seychelles Hindu Kovil Sangam will be organizing a series of religious celebrations on Friday, April 23, and Saturday, April 24, at the temple on Quincy Street for Hindu devotees and members of the general public. All the religious observations start this morning with Ganapathy Homam, Yaga puja, maha abishegan and special puja and will conclude on Saturday night. The main event of sangabishegam will be at 12 noon on Saturday. To also mark the occasion, a religious cultural programme is being planned for May 1, 2004.



The temple, known as Navasakthi Vinayagar to its devotees, is the only place of worship for the more than four hundred families of the Hindu faith in Seychelles. A spokesperson from Hindu Kovil Sangam said that during the past twelve years of its existence, the temple has done a lot to promote the ideas of Hinduism, which is “Peace and Harmony.”



“Through its various activities and festivals such as the Thai Poosam festival and Kavadi Procession, Vinayagar Chathurthy procession, the temple has provided welcome attractions for tourists and the Seychellois public alike,” the spokesperson said. The temple, build in an ancient Indian architecture dating back thousands of years, is a major tourist attraction in Victoria. Through its open-door policy, everybody is welcome in the temple, but one has to be mindful of talking off one’s footwear as a sign of respect.
