WASHINGTON, D.C., May 8, 2004: A group to further understanding of Hinduism and promote its ethos of tolerance and pluralism has been launched in the United States. The Hindu American Foundation would provide a voice for the two million-strong Hindu community in the US by interacting with government, media, think-tanks and the public about the religion and issues concerning them, according to a release from the group in Washington.
At a function on May 5, the Foundation members interacted with over a dozen US legislators with the purpose of furthering understanding of Hinduism and promoting its ethos of tolerance and pluralism, the release said. Sri Sri Ravi Shankar of the Art of Living Foundation was also present. Shankar said liberty, assimilation and pluralism are the salient features of both American and Hindu cultures. HAF President Mihir Meghani said the attendance of many Congressional leaders was a reflection of the rising numbers and growing contributions of Hindu Americans.
