HOUSTON, TEXAS, May 13, 2004: The Balagokulam Prayer Group at Katy celebrated Shlokathon 2004 on two Sundays on April 17 and May 1. Over the last 2-3 months the prayer group participants from the age group of 3-5 years to 17 years were learning chanting of several Sanskrit shlokas (verses from the Vedas, Upanishads and other scripture) and also understanding their meaning word by word. In the first phase held on April 17, children of the prayer group recited individually as many shlokas as they could recite. There were three judges to assess their performance, Ramesh Desai, Vivek Thakurdesai and Dr. P.V. Pathak. The assessment was based on number of shlokas recited, pronunciations, posture and rhythm. In the second phase held on May 1, participants presented shlokas with narration, meaning and action based on Bharat Natyam postures. Sita Kulandaisamy presented four shlokas in dance form. Small children came forward one by one narrating various aspects of the sacred syllable “aum” and sat in the formation of an aum. A quiz contest was conducted for the elder kids from 8 years onwards. They were asked questions based on the shlokas, the meaning of words and significance of each shloka. Amit Mishra was the chief guest. The shlokathon was organized by parents of the prayer group children with initiative of Jaini Parikh, Nachiketa Anand and Jayanti Nayak.
