CHENNAI, INDIA, May 18, 2004: In the wake of her party’s defeat in the Lok Sabha polls, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Jayalalithaa withdrew the state’s anti-conversion law, which had come under attack by her rivals during the election. She also announced restoration of free power to farmers, cancellation of all punishments imposed on government employees for their participation in the strike in July last, withdrawal of defamation cases against the press including The Hindu, restoration of supply of essential commodities under PDS to all ration card holders, free bus passes to students from standard one to standard twelve, and the reintroduction of reduced bus fare for college students. The anti-conversion law, similar to that of other states in India, was intended to reduce the use of fraud, coercion and inducement in evangelical efforts.
