REUNION, FRANCE, May 29, 2004: From last Sunday, May 23, the Association Culturelle Siva Soupramanien, chaired by Marc Cadivel, has celebrated the ten-day festival in honor of Lord Muruga. It will be completed on Vaikasi Visakam, June 2. Every afternoon since last Sunday, the numerous faithful gather at the temple at the place called “la Marine” at Saint-Benoit to pray. The kavadi ceremony begins each day around 3 p.m. and is concluded in the evening, after a procession through the village, by a blessed meal offered to all the participants. The “Ten Days Festival” (La fete de dix jours) is a major event for the Tamil Hindu community of Reunion island. Similar ceremonies are also occurring at the Siva Soupramanien temple of Saint-Paul. The La Marine temple at Saint-Benoit is currently undergoing renovation financed partly by the gifts of devotees. If all goes well it should be completed before the end of next year, according to Cadivel.
