LONDON, ENGLAND, July 9, 2004: The National Council of Hindu Temples (UK) will be launching the first-ever directory of Hindu temples in the UK on Saturday, July 17, 2004, at Shree Sanatan temple in Leicester. It took over three years to compile the information on 141 Hindu temples that serve about 600,000 Hindus in Britain. Most number of temples, 32 in total, are found in London, reflecting the fact that just over 50 per cent of the Hindu population live there. O.P. Sharma MBE, President of the National Council of Hindu temples, said: “This directory was very much needed. It contains, for the first time, information that was not generally available. It will serve community well.”
“The first directory for Hindu temples in the UK will be a useful tool to locate Hindu temples and understand their various functions,” said Bimal Krishna Das, the general secretary of the National Council of Hindu temples. The National Council of Hindu Temples (UK) is an umbrella body which links over 90 Hindu temples. It acts as a resource and one of the main consultative bodies on the matters relating to the Hindu community of Britain and the Hindu religion and culture.
