KANCHIPURAM, INDIA, August 1, 2004: The 70th Jayanthi Day of Sri Jayendra Saraswathi Swamigal, the 69th Peetathipathi of Kanchi Sankara Math (monastery) falls tomorrow. The swamigal combines the service of God and service to humanity. His mission is towards promoting the well-being of the holy land of Bharat and upholding of its rich tradition, value and cultural heritage, says this report. Welfare initiatives undertaken by the Math under his guidance include Dalit uplift, providing medicare through various institutions and education for the needy. In celebration, special homas (fire worship) have been performed in the Kanchi Math complex since July 23. A procession will take place tomorrow morning in which 108 pots of milk will be carried to Sri Kamakshi Amman temple for abhisekham. Later, Thampathi pooja (honoring 70 couples) will take place at the Math where 70 cows will be distributed. Kanchi Sankara Mutt was established by Sri Sankara Bhagavadpadcharya about 2,500 years ago, according to the Math. Presently, Sri Jayendra Saraswathi Swami, the 69th archarya of the mutt and Sri Vijayendra Saraswathi Swamigal head the Kanchi Sankara Mutt. Sri Kanchi Kamakoti Peetam has the distinction of an unbroken line of 70 Acharyas. the Acharyas have taken measures for the protection of Vedic dharma, for propagating the Advaita disciline, and alleviating the sufferings of the people.
