KOLKATA, INDIA, November 5, 2004: Schools in West Bengal have joined the bandwagon by encouraging school children to celebrate Deepavali without using fire crackers. School Education minister, Kanti Biswas, explains, “We want teachers to counsel students about the ban and the fact that flouting the order entails punishment. But more than the fear factor, we will ask teachers to highlight the harmful effects of sound and atmospheric pollution caused by firecrackers. We want to instill a sense of responsibility among school children, not just coax them out of bursting firecrackers.” Spokesperson from South Point school, Krishna Damani, adds, “It has been part of every environmental studies and value education class in the school for months together. Our students, from primary to higher-secondary, have been told not to read the ban as an end to festivities because it’s even better to celebrate with soundless fireworks.”
