CHENNAI, INDIA, November 12, 2004: High drama was witnessed at the airport in Chennai when Senior Pontiff of the Kanchi mutt Sri Jayendra Saraswathi, who was arrested in connection with the murder case, was brought to Chennai from Hyderabad in the wee hours of Friday. As the Special Aircraft touched down at the Airport at Chennai around 0245 hrs, the Swamiji refused to board a police van and angrily asked the police “Am I Veerappan?” (South India’s most notorious outlaw, recently killed in an encounter with police). However, Thiruvallur District Superintendent of Police cajoled him and convinced him to board his own Tata sumo car in which the Pontiff was accompanied by the SP and three other police officers to Kancheepuram where he was produced before Judicial magistrate-I at his residence, and remanded to 15 days judicial custody.
