HPI

KAUAI, HAWAII, November 28, 2004: HPI reader Paul Levesque, a priest of the Episcopal Church, makes this point about our HPI report of November 17, “Being Hindu in the American ‘Bible Belt.’ “

“May I be allowed to object to your characterization of the Bible Belt as being ‘heavily Christian’? It would be more accurate to state that it is heavily fundamentalist Christian, or characterized by biblical literalism. I live in New Mexico….close enough to the Bible Belt to be part of it. Though I am a Christian, I feel overwhelmed, stifled, saddened and, yes, disgusted by many aspects of this brand of Christianity which has refused to evolve in response to God’s clear calling! Christianity can no longer be considered monolithic.”
