COLOMBO, SRI LANKA, November 29, 2004: The Ministry of Agricultural Marketing Development, Co-operative Development, Hindu Affairs and the Ministry of Assisting Education and Vocation Training and Planning to establish cultural centers in Jaffna, Trincomalee, Mannar, Vavuniya Pothuvil and Colombo. The total estimated cost for the program is US$400,000. $133,000 has been allocated for this project in 2004. Work expected to commence towards the end of year will be completed in 2005. Cultural Centers will be established in every district to preserve and promote cultural activities such as dance, music, yoga, etc. The cultural centre will be used to propagate Hindu religion by conducting discourses on Hindu Philosophy. Minister K. N. Douglas Devananda said due to the war and displacement, people have lost faith in religion and cultural activities. He said his ministry aims to re-divide the religious and cultural activities to bring enthusiasm in people’s lives and give them hope for the future. Devananda said in the past temples were the seats of learning and apart from worshipping the deities and celebrating festivals, people engaged in cultural experience using the temple compound.
