KUALA LUMPUR, MALAYSIA, December 16, 2004: “Kamba Nataka” a dramatized English version book of Kamba Ramayanam by Dr. S.M. Ponniah was released on December 16, 2004, at the K.R. Soma auditorium, Kuala Lumpur, by Minister of Works, Dato Seri S. Samy Vellu. President of Malaysia Hindu Sangam (“source”), Datuk A.Vaithilingam, delivered keynote address. Associate Professor of University Malaya, Mr. Singaravelu, reviewed the book. Hundreds of academicians and leaders from various Hindu based organizations attended this launch. The Kamba Ramayanam is a Tamil rendering of the famed story of Lord Rama by Kambar, court poet of Kulottunga Chola III (1178-1218ce). The translation of “Kamba Nataka” is a concerted and continued effort of Dr. S.M. Ponniah over a period of 40 years. Datuk A. Vaithilingam, in his address mentioned that Dr. S.M. Ponniah was the past president of Malaysia Hindu Sangam. His dedication towards the development of religion and culture is worthy of mention. His greatest contribution towards literature is writing of this play. It must be mentioned that this play is unique and only of its kind in English. The Minister applauded and praised Dr.S.Ponniah by saying that he has brought honor to Malaysia by producing this splendid book. He appealed to Universities locally and overseas, all libraries and academicians in Tamil Nadu and other parts of the world to support and read this book.
