LAUTOKA, FIJI, December 19, 2004: One of Fiji’s largest Hindu groups, the Arya Pratinidhi Sabha, will set up a university in Lautoka next year. The organization’s president, Kamlesh Arya, says they will start tertiary level studies at Pundit Vishnu Deo Memorial College at Saweni next year. Arya announced the organization’s plans at its centennial celebrations in Suva today. Arya says, the decision to start a university at Saweni is no coincidence because they have considered the needs of students in the western section of Fiji who have to leave home to pursue tertiary studies in Suva on the other side of the island. The Arya Pratinidhi Sabha’s first school, Gurukul Primary School, was established in Saweni in 1918. Prime Minister Laisenia Qarase, who was the chief guest at the celebrations today, commended the organization for its contribution towards the country, especially in the education sector. The group has so far set up 15 primary schools and 6 secondary schools.
