MINNEAPOLIS, MINNESOTA, USA, April 13, 2005: A magnificent temple is under construction in Minneapolis in the American Mid-West. Coming up on 40 pristine acres in Maple Grove area, the Vishnu temple when completed (most likely in 2006) would become one of the most imposing Hindu structures in the U. S., says this article. Being constructed by the Hindu Society of Minnesota, the first phase of the temple is expected to be inaugurated in October this year. The Hindu Society already owns another temple in Minneapolis. “But this temple is going to be special. It would prove to be a milestone in the history of Hindus of Minnesota,” says Pujbhai Patel, a Hindu Society official.

While the cost of construction is estimated to be more than US$8.5 million, the temple management would require over $300,000 every year for its maintenance, upkeep, priest and staff, said Patel. Money for the construction has come mainly through generous contributions from the small Hindu community in Minnesota and through fund raising functions held by the Hindu Society. The society is planning to open the temple when completed for various religious, cultural and community services such as cultural programs, dance/music lessons, youth camps, wedding, reception, Navaratri, family puja, religious education for children, discourses on Hinduism, meditation center, yoga classes, library and elderly day center. The population of Indians in Minnesota has increased from 8, 234 in 1990 to nearly 17, 000 in 2000 and by 2004 it crossed 20,000, Patel said.
