KUALA LUMPUR April 4, 2005: Malaysians can now get a healthy dose of nutrients from a plate of unpolished brown rice. Serba Wangi Sdn Bhd has launched “ecoBrown’s” rice which retains vitamins, minerals and proteins. Deputy Agriculture and Agro-based Industries Minister Datuk Seri Kerk Choo Ting, who launched the product, said it was a timely move since Malaysians are becoming more health conscious. “The launch of the brown rice is in tandem with the Government’s efforts to create a more dynamic food industry. Currently, Malaysia imports brown rice and it is good to see the product being locally produced,” he said. Kerk said the Government would promote the consumption of brown rice for health reasons. “Brown rice is healthier compared to white rice as vitamins and minerals are removed when processing white rice,” he said. Serba Wangi Sdn Bhd managing director Low Kok Kean said the best padi is selected to be processed using COGEN, a European drying system which retains the original taste.
HPI adds: White polished rice was promoted starting in the 18th century because it has a longer shelf life than brown rice.
