HAMBURG, GERMANY, May 24, 2005: Christian Eckert (48) is a Journalist, TV presenter and television producer, living in Hamburg, Germany. He has been teaching journalism and media presentation at German media schools for many years. For 25 years he has been visiting Sri Lanka regularly. He was in the City of Galle when the tsunami hit the island–Eckert just managed to survive the wave. Later, with others, he founded the Serendib Foundation Germany, an organization set out to help the victims of the catastrophe to get back on their feet again. He just returned from a 20 day trip to the affected areas of the island and has written a first person account of direct attempts of Christian fundamentalist groups in converting mostly native Sri Lankan Buddhists and Hindu tsunami victims. During Eckert’s travels around the island, checking into different projects, he stumbled upon several accusations. Said Eckert, “A man in his 30s, with two kids, told us that a foreign aid group was registering ‘T- victims’ for new houses. When the man wanted to register for a house, they told him to bring proof that he was from the area–and a victim. They told him the easiest and the quickest way would be to get a affidavit from a native Christian father. When the man went there, the Christian priest told him point blank that he does not know him at all, but if he could come to church everyday at least for the next two months or so, they he would be willing to issue a letter. The man gave second thought and stayed in the camp with his two children.” For Eckert’s full account, click on “source” above.
