TIRUPATI, INDIA, August 8, 2005: A record offering of ten gold bars of large size, worth US$136,000, was made by an anonymous devotee in the hundi (offering box) of the famous hill shrine of lord Venkateswara at Tirumala today, temple sources said. Each of the 24 carat gold ingots, weighed one kg. They carried the markings “UAE” and “South Africa,” they said. The sources said this was the first time in the history of the hill temple such a huge gold offering of its kind had been made in the hundi. The offering, bundled in a yellow cloth, was noticed when the hundi was emptied for counting in the forenoon.
