NADI, FIJI, September 21, 2005: Preparation work has started by the committee of one of the largest Hindu temples in the Pacific for the place of worship’s renovation and repainting. Painting of the Sri Siva Subramaniya Swami temple in Nadi can only be carried out after 12 years because of certain rules. Apart from being a place of worship for Nadi residents and others around the country, the temple is also a tourist attraction. Construction work on the temple started in 1991 and it was completed in 1994, when a grand opening was held with the participation of priests from India. Ever since the temple was officially opened in 1994, the colorful building has not undergone any renovation or painting works. Temple’s Devasthanam board vice chairman, Ram Reddy said the Sri Siva Subramaniya Swami Temple could not be compared to other temples. Asked why renovation and painting was being carried out after a long time, he said, “Under the Agamic rules, the temple can only be renovated or painted after 12 years.” “Once prayers start after the opening of the temple, one cannot go on to the top of the temple for any purpose,” he said. “The temple’s 12 years would complete next year and we have started preparing for next year’s mahakumbhabhishekam. “We have two artists from India who started painting on July 4 and it is okay to start re-painting the temple now although the 12 years will be completed next year. “A grand celebration will be held from June 28 to July 2 next year and the main day will be July 2.” Mr. Reddy said the estimated cost of the renovation and painting work was US$162,000. “Some priests from India and nadaswaram (musicians) will be coming for the celebration.”
