MOSCOW, RUSSIA, September 24, 2005: The Ministry of Culture, Government of India, in collaboration with Jawahar Lal Nehru Cultural Centre, Moscow, and Sangeet Natak Akademi, has organized a nine-day long cultural festival entitled “Days of India” in Russia from September 26, 2005. The festival will be inaugurated by Shri S. Jaipal Reddy, Union Minister of Information & Broadcasting and Culture, in the presence of his Russian counterpart. Altogether, a contingent of 96 artists (66 folk artists and 30 classical artists) will be performing in four cities of Russia — Moscow, St. Petersburg, Kaluga and Tver. At the inaugural function, Pt. Shiv Kumar Sharma will give a recital on santoor. This will be followed by Tchaikovsky’s ballet “Swan Lake” being performed in Mohiniyattam style by the renowned exponent of Mohiniyattam – Smt. Bharti Shivaji and her students. Other performances are by folk ensemble groups. In the grand finale, flutist Pt. Hari Prasad Chaurasia and violinist Dr. L. Subramaniam will perform. This 10-day festival is a reciprocal event to the “Days of Russia” held in India in 2003. The Creative Director for the festival is Shri Bansi Kaul and the designer for the puppet exhibition is Shri Neeraj Sahai.
