WASHINGTON UNIVERSITY, ST. LOUIS, January 27, 2006: Washington University now boasts a team of 16 dancers that will be attending the “Garba With Attitude” competition in Irvine, California in February. Originating from the state of Gujarat and performed primarily around Navaratri, Garba became popular at the University during Diwali last fall and from there the team decided to try out at the first national competition in February. Starting out as an all-girl’s endeavor, males have joined the team because of a requirement for the competition in California. Rajat Jain, one of the 4 choreographers, says, “I’ve never choreographed before. It’s a different experience. You’re around the same people and you get to know them really well and learn to trust them. It’s like being on a sports team. You trust others will pull off what they’re supposed to.” Senior Noopur Garg says, “The hardest part is individually getting better. We have to do the same moves, go at the same time, twirl at the same speed. But it’s so cool when it comes together.” Practising two to three hours a day, dancers and choreographers have pulled together to make a strong team that is constantly improving. Sophomore Erendira Quintana Morales sums it up, “We’re going to have a lot of fun, do our best and bring back a lot of memories. We don’t bring a lot of experience, but definitely a lot of spirit.”
