RANCHI, INDIA, March 10, 2006: That Holi is a festival of colors and love and friendship is all very fine, but it has an ugly side to it as well, and many of the city schools seem to have experienced it in the last few years. And that’s the reason why they have issued warnings to students to abstain from playing Holi. And in the list of schools which have taken such a decision, are also included RSS (see Wikipedia, here) run schools such as Sarswati Shishu Vidya Mandir. The decision may sound hard, but the schools are not willing to take chances. School administrations cited unpleasant incidents, like last year when some students had smeared colors mixed with chemicals into their friends’ eyes, causing severe damages to their vision. Director of DAV Ranchi zone L.R. Saini said: “During assembly, the principal warned the students about using chemical colors that are harmful to the skin,” he said. Many school authorities also found in the coming CBSE exams a good excuse for not allowing Holi, as they didn’t want broken taps, dusters and benches. “We have warned students of Class IX and even lower classes that colors should be largely avoided and in case they are caught they would not be allowed to appear for the rest of the examination,” said the principal of a prominent school. However, in spite of warnings, most students of the city-based schools were seen playing with colors. One of the students of Guru Nanak Higher Secondary, Manjeet Kumar, a student of Class VIII, said: “We are not allowed to use colors in the school but then while moving in the bus we play with ink among our friends. But he added that nowadays a teacher too travels in the bus, so they can’t really indulge themselves.
