UNITED KINGDOM, April 10, 2006: (HPI note: The complete story and photographs are available at URL above.) A Hinduism Award Ceremony was celebrated on the evening of March 29th at Brent Town Hall. The candidates who sat for government examinations in Hinduism at GCSE and Advanced levels were awarded their certificates. Some of these candidates achieved the maximum 100 percent marks in Hinduism modules at Advanced level. Every year about 300 candidates sit for various examinations in Hinduism. The head of Edexcel Board and heads of religious education from the Department of Education and Skills (DfES) are invited to give out certificates. This year the chief advisor on religious education to the DfES as well as the Qualification and Curriculum Authority (QSA), John Keast, together with the chief officer from Edexcel board, Ian Rowberry, attended the event. The certificates were distributed in the presence of a number of Hindu temple bodies including the Swaminarayan temples in Neasdon, Willesden Green and Harrow. The Hindu Council UK is the largest body in the United Kingdom involved in teaching comprehensive Hinduism to a vast number of candidates every year. These activities are then extended by taking Hindu teachings at schools, colleges and universities.
