BHOPAL, INDIA, April 22, 2006: One Madhya Pradesh village settles all its disputes in a Hindu temple. Residents of Deshmohini village, 10 km. from Hoshangabad town, have never visited a police station. The village has less than 1,000 people, mainly from the Kurmi community. “It is not that disputes never arise among people,”” explained village elder Surekha Chourey. “Whenever there is a dispute, the elders call a meeting at the temple, hear both parties and give their decision, which is obeyed.”
