NEW DELHI, INDIA, May 26, 2006: The Union Cabinet today approved a proposal to introduce a Bill in Parliament to change the name of the Union Territory of Pondicherry to “Puducherry.” The People of Pondicherry have been demanding renaming of Pondicherry to Puducherry as the territory was known in ancient times. It came to be pronounced as Pondicherry by foreign rulers. The Legislative Assembly of Pondicherry has already passed an official resolution to this effect.
