SUNNYVALE, CALIFORNIA, June 11, 2006: Over 12,000 Indian Americans turned out at the Hindu Temple and Community Center in Sunnyvale June 4 to attend a performance by the legendary Narinder Chanchal. He performed, without pause, for nearly four hours, singing many of his most popular bhajans. The Sunnyvale temple is one of the stops on Chanchal’s world tour, which is in its eleventh year. Chanchal was joined that night by performers Raju and Kaul, who donned costumes and danced as Lords Siva and Krishna, respectively. The event was so popular, said organizers, that there was a line to enter well into the night. Chanchal and his group received a standing ovation from their audience. One of India’s top devotional singers, Chanchal first came into prominence when he was selected by the late filmmaker Raj Kapoor to sing for the 1970 hit, Bobby. Chanchal’s recording of “Mandir Masjid Todo” became a huge national hit and, from then on, the job offers flowed freely. Although he was offered many film projects, Chanchal decided to devote his time to bhajans and jagrans. Narinder Chanchal will be performing bhajans in all major cities and towns across the United States and Canada in June and July 2006.
