FREMONT, CALIFORNIA, August 20, 2006: A two-day festival in Fremont that is attended by over 60,000 Indo-Americans in the Bay area has become known to the community as a festival advocating Indian culture with an American twist. Even though the festival does not have a religious theme as the festivals do in India, Indian music, dance and cultural performances are the highlight for many attendees. Rajan Bhatt, a 42-year-old software designer from Fremont, comments as he stood outside the Hindu Swayamsevak Sangh booth, handing out fliers to promote Hindu culture and the Dharmic traditions of India, “It’s festivals like this one that help remind the younger generation about their roots. It’s very important for me that my daughters understand Hindu culture. Fremont, with its large Indian population, gives us an opportunity to do that.” 17-year-old Komal Daryani of Milpitas who choreographed Bollywood dance moves for about a month at the Fremont Temple says, “What’s important about this festival is that Indo-Americans of all ages can remember their heritage and share it with the greater community. This festival is for everyone. It’s really here so other people understand what we’re about.” Daryani’s friend and fellow dancer, 25-year-old Shweta Verma, adds, “This is a festival of Indians living in America. So we bring the American spirit. It’s part of who we are. We’re affected by both cultures.”
