NEW DELHI, INDIA, October 12, 2006: India has one of the richest and most diverse cultural heritages associated with the use of medicinal plants, says Minister for Health and Family Welfare Dr. Anbumani Ramadoss. Ayurveda and Siddha, which are 3,000-5,000 years old, in particular have stood the test of time in providing preventive, promotive and curative health care to people and are gaining increasing worldwide attention and acceptance. He said that looking back at the history of drug development we see that many modern medicines have their origin in traditional medicines and ethno-pharmacology. In light of this, Dr. Ramadoss has launched a plan to set up herbal gardens in public schools. Today’s launch was at the Army Public School, Dhaula Kuan. He urged the students to take good care of the herbal garden saying that forty schools in New Delhi will establish such gardens. Next year there will be a contest to judge the best garden. Herbal gardens are proposed to be set up in about 1,000 schools all over the country with active participation of State Medicinal Plants Boards.
