NEW YORK, NEW YORK, April 27, 2007: In an April 25 Op-Ed piece, Linda Hirshman argued it may be “easier in the short term” for a new mother to leave her job and stay at home but she should resist the easy road and return to work. Ms. Hirshman’s essay has elicited a spirited discussion published on the Time’s Op-Ed page. A number of obviously well-educated mothers have responded to Ms. Hirshman’s piece with some excellent points, some of which should be mandatory reading for those who make our laws and run our businesses. One woman comments on the power of choice, something American citizens have worked so tirelessly for and argues moms should be supported regardless their decision to stay at home. Another questions how stay-at-home moms are preparing for retirement (who’s funding Mommy’s 401K?) – a serious question in today’s economic climate. And another suggests to Ms. Hirshman that stay-at-home moms are not abandoning “participation in public life” to stay home, rather they are teaching by example the power of being politically and socially active in their respective communities.
