THANJAVUR, TAMIL NADU, July 1, 2007: The famed tenth century Brihadeswara Temple that is on UNESCO list of monuments has become a hub of activity initiated by the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) officials. As a result of the renovations on the ceiling on the northern side of the temple, twenty Siva Lingams were temporarily removed in ceremony by temple priests to a safer location. The new releases explain, “The work includes replacing a broken and damaged ceiling of northern corridor to a length of 26 meters and repairing a sunken corridor to a length of 65 meters. Skilled stone work masons have been employed for the purpose. The Centre had sanctioned US$144,000 for the repair works, expected to be completed in another three or four months.”
