Designed for illiterates and foreign inmates who cannot read English, the book tells the story of an unhappy prisoner who learns about yoga and meditation from his cell mate. It includes breathing exercises, stretching, relaxation techniques and meditation.

Sandy Chubb, the 63-year-old director of Oxford-based charity Prison Phoenix Trust, said: “When you have lost everything, your name and your family, your money, your home and your ability to order your day, prisoners think they can’t get any lower…

“[With yoga and meditation,] prisoners learn to find something in themselves that they like … and these feelings of isolation begin to melt and they start to reach out.” She notes, “Research has shown there are physical and mental benefits.”
