Corporates which are actively associated with temple administration and renovation, also cheered the move.
The High Court’s decision on Monday drew mixed reactions, with some sections voicing against Government’s managing of temple funds. But industry officials say the region stands to benefit from more tourists and investments going forward.
“Earlier, we faced some problems in getting schemes implemented. We are more interested in promoting Pichavaram, which is part of the eco-tourism circuit. Pichavaram is already being promoted as a lesser-known tourist destination,” said a top official from the tourism department who did not wish to be named, citing the sensitivity of the issue.
South India hotels and restaurants association secretary T Natarajan said it will take some time for the government take over to have an impact on the tourism front. “But, infrastructure and amenities in and around the temple will get a boost,” he added.
