KAUAI, HAWAII, April 12, 2009: Facebook is one of the most popular modern social networking platforms on the web today. It has 200 million active users, more than two-thirds of which are outside of college. It is enormously successful not only as a way for friends and family to keep in touch with each other, share news, photos and videos, but also as a way for businesses and organizations to keep in touch with their customers and members through Facebook Pages.
For this reason, Kauai’s Hindu Monastery, headquarters of Hinduism Today magazine and Hindu Press International, has created a Facebook Page. More than 300 people have become fans of the page since it went online just five days ago. Regular posts keep fans informed of what is going on at the monastery, the monastery’s public schedule and contact information are posted, and discussions and other interactive features of the page allow fans to participate dynamically in a familiar context. Facebook Pages are very easy to set up. Many religious institutions have Facebook Pages, and Kauai’s Hindu Monastery’s page on Facebook serves as an example of what other Hindu temples, ashrams and institutions can do to keep in better touch with their members.
A Facebook Page, also known as a public profile, is mostly the same as a personal profile, but for a business or organization. More than four million users become fans of Facebook Pages every day. Becoming a fan of a page allows users to see updates from that page on their Facebook news feed, which more and more users pay attention to throughout the day as a vital source of information about their friends, family and the businesses and organizations they are interested in. Details about Facebook Pages, including questions and answers and instructions for how to create them, can be found here.
